The Liberty brand dates back to 1875 when Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty printed the first Liberty fabrics after opening his first store on Regent Street in London.
First named East India House, Liberty originally gained fame for its floral prints that were inspired by Japanese culture and the brand became widely recognised for the various print styles introduced into European fashion.
Following the production of miniature floral, paisley & abstract prints in the 1920s, these fabrics became known as 'Liberty Prints’. Since then, the company has grown a global reputation for quality fabrics and cutting-edge textile design, renowned for its historic 50,000-strong print archive.
To this day, Liberty London remains in its flagship building on Regent Street, in the heart of Soho. Liberty Fabric has a unique production process, with hand-drawn motifs created by the talented in-house design team and printed at Liberty's Italian printing mill near Lake Como with skilled technicians who oversee the production of over 150 different designs every year.
Liberty Fabrics represent the foundations of heritage fashion; pioneering design and decorative arts with a creative amalgamation of new and historic artworks sourced from Liberty’s vast breadth of 19th and 20th century designs.
This ensures that Liberty print blouses are true classics that never go out of style.
Liberty Fabric is famous for its soft and lightweight yet breathable and durable qualities - precisely the reason why James Meade offers a collection of wonderful Liberty blouses.
Tana Lawn™ is one of the most popular Liberty fabrics, made from 100% cotton with fine silk-like threads and a tight weave to create a super soft fabric that is ideal for women’s blouses.
Made from specially selected ultra-fine long staple Egyptian cotton, Tana Lawn ™ is a batiste fabric that has a high thread count which gives it a gentle lustre, excellent handle and fantastic durability. These unique properties are of similar nature to ancient silk weaves, although Tana Lawn™ cotton is far more durable and also machine washable, making it suitable for everyday wear.
These unique cotton fibres were discovered near Lake Tana in Ethiopia by Liberty buyer William Hayes Dorrell whilst he was travelling through East Africa in the 1920s. This discovery sparked inspiration for the name of this famous fabric.
Its bespoke production process also involves mercerisation which gives this Liberty fabric the ability to carry brighter colours and more vibrant prints than other ordinary printed fabrics.
At James Meade, we handpick fabrics to create an exclusive selection of vivid and versatile Liberty print blouses for women.
